It is a measure of body composition that uses a simple formula based on height and weight. It is calculated by taking a person’s weight and dividing it by their height squared. The higher the number, the more overweight you are.
This table will summarize these numbers:
Range
underweight
healthy range
overweight
obese
Men
<20
20-25
26-30
>30
Women
<19
19-24
25-30
>30
Although it may be a Quick Assessment, it is just not Accurate enough to Rely on or Diagnose any Condition.
Warning! The Body Mass Index numbers are only meant to be used as a simple means of classifying sedentary individuals with an average body composition. The optimal weight should relate to numbers between 18.5 and 25.
This is just a guide and there is an inherent problem with this formula. It does not take into account age, athletic bodies, gender, water weight, bone size or differentiate between lean body mass and fat mass. As a result, these numbers will be skewed for heavily muscled athletes, the aging population who has lost muscle mass and should not be used for children.
When it comes to evaluating weight and its impact on health, you should take the following aspects into consideration:
Your % of body fat
Waist circumference
Body Mass Index number
Physical activity pattern
Body fat location (subcutaneous or visceral fat)
Body composition is better calculated using skinfold measurements or underwater weighing.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is defined as a cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) stemming from prolonged, repetitive, forceful or awkward hand movements. It is a disease of the musculoskeletal system produced by gradual build up of micro-injuries and damage to the muscles, tendons and nerves of the neck, shoulder, forearm and hand. Perpetuating factors such as poor posture, poor conditioning, ill-fitting furniture, inadequate nutrition and stress of an increased workload can make a bad situation worse. Symptoms of RSI may include fatigue, weakness, pain, tingling, numbness and even impairment of motor control.
Why is it important to know if you have a zinc deficiency?
There are three main reasons why you need to have your zinc levels checked:
Increased Oxidative Stress
DNA Damage
Decreased Testosterone
Oxidative Stress:
“Despite the many known health benefits of exercise, there is a body of evidence suggesting that endurance exercise is associated with oxidative stress.” (4)
Endurance athletes have increased oxidative stress in comparison to athletes participating in anaerobic sports. Does this mean endurance training is bad for you? Not necessarily, however if you are a competitive athlete or you are performing extensive endurance activities, oxidative stress is inevitable. You can decrease your oxidative stress by making sure your zinc levels are not depleted. [click to continue…]
