In the sport of golf, a certain degree of balance is needed.  During the golf swing, the body must work in many directions at high very high speeds.   In fact, the downswing portion (from top of back-swing to impact) happens in about a quarter of a second.  In addition to the body moving in three different planes, it must simultaneously transfer weight from the trail leg to the lead leg.

Balance has a big effect on consistency and accuracy of your golf swing.  However, the largest factor improving consistency and accuracy is having proper sequence, which I will describe in a future post.

To test your level of balance, stand on one leg with the knee and hip flexed 90 degrees.  The goal is to be able to stand on one leg with eyes closed for up to 25 seconds.  If you can stand on one leg for 25 seconds or more, your balance is considered normal.

Many people have limited thoracic rotation which can force the lumbar spine to excessively rotate.  According to (Nordin & Frankel,1989) the lumbar spine region only has 1 – 3 degrees of lumbar rotation for each vertebra (L/1 through L/5).

During a golf swing, total lumbar rotation should not exceed 18 degrees.  Too much lumbar rotation causes lumbar instability, which will at some point turn into low back pain. [click to continue…]
